Assalamu Alaikum Dear Respected Al-Arqam Families,
Besm Allahi Al-Rahman Al-Rahim
"Read in the name of your Lord Who created. He created man from a clot. Read and your Lord is Most Honorable, Who taught (to write) with the pen. Taught man what he knew not."(Surah Al Alaq 96:1-5)
Welcome to the new and returning families to the 2019-2020 school year. On behalf of Al-Arqam staff, I would like to welcome our new kindergarten students and our returning students in all grade levels.  For the kindergarten and new students, Al-Arqam community will very soon be your second home.  We will ensure a smooth transition so, you don't feel strange or different.   Al-Arqam teachers and support staff spent countless hours over summer to create an educational space that is welcoming to your child.  I want like to extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to Al-Arqam support staff, in particular, brother Shafiq.  They worked diligently through summer to clean and paint the school, so the building is ready for students to start a new exciting year on August 14th, 2019.   Many structural and technological updates took place during the summer.
We are excited and eager to begin the academic year with many initiatives and programs that will strengthen the pedagogical foundations, and the tarbiyah program at Al-Arqam.  At Al-Arqam, the two of them are inseparable and complement one another.   Frequent and regular benchmark assessments will support the newly adopted English and Math curriculum.  2019-2020 school year marks the alignment of the  Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) to the California Common Core Standards.  A newly innovative science curriculum that adheres to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) for the elementary grades is in the making.  An introduction to MAP testing in the area of science for grades 3-5. The curriculum council staff works on the History textbooks will have to continue to the next school year for further discussions. As far as the Tarbiyah program, all students in grades 6-9 will have a one tarbiyah block a week.  For elementary grades, the Islamic Studies period on Fridays will focus on reflections and life lessons.
I work effortlessly to gather student feedback in school improvement efforts.  Based on the student reflections, Al-Arqam sees the need to establish an IB support center and a tutoring center for grades 6-12 (lunchtime).  Alhamdulillah, a new resource and technology classroom, will open its doors to staff and students.  For elementary students; an afterschool tutoring center will open its doors during the 2019-2020 school year on specified days of the week.   Al-Arqam administration office will send you updates on when and how the afterschool program will starts.
One of the school priority is Al-Arqam safety for all.  The work started by the safety committee (staff and parents) will continue with frequent meetings and adding more security measures.  The school, with the help and support of the community, is looking to purchase classroom emergency kits and a visitor management system.
Al-Arqam will start a new pick up procedures where parents have to be in their cars.  At the beginning of the year; every family will be given an identifier to be placed on the windshield.  If you have more than one car for pick up, multiple ids will be issued to your family.  Students have to enter the vehicle only from the passenger side.  Staff members will be in supervision to ensure effective implementation and student safety.  InshaAllah, we are hoping to implement this procedure in the next few weeks.
Al-Arqam changed its student information system (SIS) from TeacherEase to Power School.  InshaAllah, all parents and students will be given their access codes at the beginning of the year, so grades, attendance, discipline, etc. will be accessible to parents and students.  There is a volunteer manual included in the student/parent handbook.  Please read and sign all the necessary documentation if you are planning to volunteer at or outside the school.
Thank you for your cooperation and time. Should you have any questions, you can email me at or call at 916-391-3333. I look forward to a safe, exciting, and rewarding school year for all.
